The Importance of Thickness Testing your Rotomolded Parts

Thickness testing of your rotomolded parts should play a major role in your companies Quality Program as well as your manufacturing operations. It helps to ensure that you are providing parts that will meet quality specifications and perform as they were designed. Proper wall thickness has always been a key topic in rotomolding since it is the number one driving factor of the structural integrity of the part. It is the only non-destructive way to truly tell if the part has the correct wall thickness or not. Thickness testing also serves as a way to assist with the following things:

  1. Reducing internal scrap from underweight parts
  2. Reducing resin loss from overweight parts
  3. Catching and isolating out-of-specification parts that could possibly get to your customer and create field complaints
  4. Be used by manufacturing on every mold change during “tune in” period
  5. Be used by manufacturing during shifts to ensure parts meet specification
  6. Help Engineering during Value Engineering programs to reduce weight/cost
  7. Helps to ensure your parts wall thickness is balanced from side to side or top to bottom if needed

Developing and committing to a true thickness test program is an important part of Rotational Molding manufacturing for any company. It can help in manufacturing, engineering and quality in the many ways mentioned above. At Entec Polymers we are always here to help and assist you with your questions and we are available to provide you with industry leading technical support.
