Polyethylene, Ultra High Molecular Weight (UHMWPE)
Ultra high molecular weight polyethylene is produced in a gas or slurry phase process as a powder and has a molecular weight greater than 3 million Daltons. UHMWPE has many outstanding properties such as high abrasion resistance, impact strength, chemical resistance, environmental stress crack resistance and low coefficient of friction. UHMWPE cannot be processed by conventional melt processing methods due to its extremely high melt viscosity and would be processed by compression molding or ram extrusion. Typical uses of UHMWPE include biomedical applications (hip ,knee, spine implants), alpine skis, bearings, gliding parts, artificial ice surfaces, and other applications requiring low abrasion or high impact. UHMWPE is also used in polymer modification for improved friction and wear properties.
