Extrusion, Profile
A process where plastic is melted in a typical extrusion process then forced through a die with the approximate shape of the profile to be produced. The extrudate is then pulled into a calibration sleeve or calibration disks that are within a water-filled vacuum tank. The vacuum exerted on the plastic forces the softened material against the calibrator causing the cooling plastic to take the shape of the calibrator. The extrudate is pulled through additional cooling tanks until it is cool enough to be coiled onto a spool or cut into specific lengths and stored. Products such as drinking straws, pipe, tubing, window trim, gasketing, and many others are produced in this manner.
