Extrusion, Fiber (Spinning)

The process of melting plastic in an extruder, passing the molten plastic through a melt pump, then forcing it into a die block that has a number of very small holes. This die block is called a spinneret. The plastic flows from the spinneret where it is quickly quenched and forms a continuous filament. Small diameter fibers are quenched in the air but larger diameter monofilament requires quenching in water. The fiber is then drawn to several times the original fiber length in order to increase molecular orientation and tensile strength. Additional downstream processes can include chopping, crimping, and the application of process chemicals. Typical plastics used for spinning are PE, PP, nylon, and polyester.
